In a surprising turn of events, retired Slovakian tennis player Martin Klizan has announced his return to the professional tennis circuit after a hiatus of over two years. Klizan, who had retired in 2021 to pursue a career in politics, expressed his newfound motivation and determination to make a successful comeback.
Having secured six ATP titles and reaching the 24th position in the ATP world ranking during his previous stint, Klizan shared his aspirations in an interview with Sportweb. He emphasized his intense dedication to hard work, sacrifice, and the pursuit of success in tournaments, acknowledging the challenge of starting with a zero-point ranking and expressing the hope for wildcard invitations.
“I feel a colossal inner fire, converting both positive and negative energy into exercise and training. My goal is to demonstrate more than ever before,” Klizan stated.
The decision to return to tennis was influenced by his coaching experience with Slovakian juniors during the summer, where he observed the less-than-ideal training conditions and coaching approaches. Fueled by a desire to showcase his skills and missing the adrenaline of the game, Klizan outlined his objectives for this comeback.
His ultimate goal is to earn the dedication medal for Slovakia in the Davis Cup, being just one nomination away from achieving this prestigious accolade. Reflecting on his past victories against top players like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Stan Wawrinka, Klizan recalled the turning point when a USB containing these victories ignited an internal fire and passion for the sport.
“I need stress, constant pressure; I miss the victories, the great rallies in front of 10,000 people, the forehand winners that make the crowd rise from their seats,” Klizan expressed.
With a renewed perspective on tennis and a strong desire to improve further, Klizan believes that today’s top ten players are more accessible than a decade ago. Despite the challenges, he is determined to make a mark in the competitive tennis landscape once again.
